As all the Hawaiian volcanoes, Mauna Loa was created when the Pacific tectonic plate moved over the Hawaii hotspot in the Earth’s underlying.
Nowadays, Manua Loa is one of the wolrd's most active volcanoes. The earthquake activity caused by the volcano, increased in the first half of October, with scattered shallow events located in the summit region and the northwest flank of the volcano. Only two earthquakes were above magnitude three. Earthqueake activity declined significantly in the second half of October.
